The Venice Beach walkways offer a charming human-scaled neighborhood just off the sands of Venice Beach, though the very narrow lots and side yards create design challenges regarding natural light and privacy, as well as providing a sense of interior openness in a space barely wider than a two-car garage. Our solution was to zone the structure into three distinct first level volumes: an entry and living room with enclosed patio, a two-story sunlit atrium, and a guest suite. Upon entry into the residence, adjacent buildings disappear as sunlight spills in through atrium windows and strategically placed port holes. The soaring atrium features two loft offices and a stairway to the second floor which includes a master suite and two additional bedrooms.
