In this project for an art director, an artist, and their two children, we faced the challenge of designing an affordable house on a very steep lot. Geometric simplicity in plan allowed us to support the house on four piles, the least costly foundation. The piles and floor system form a “table” on which we placed two objects, a white plaster pyramidal roof structure containing the main living space, and a flat-roofed black corrugated metal structure containing the kitchen and dining room. Down below are three bedrooms.
