Harold Zellman, Principal

Harold came to architecture with a broad background in art and design that began at UCLA Department of Art where he received his bachelors and Master of Fine Arts degrees in design. After teaching design at Michigan State University, he returned to UCLA where he completed his Master of Architecture.

Harold combines architectural practice with historical research and writing. With sociologist Roger Friedland, he authored The Fellowship: The Untold Story of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship published by HarperCollins, a groundbreaking look at how art and life merge at Taliesin, the atelier from which Wright designed all of his late career architecture masterpieces. Also with Friedland, Harold has studied and written about the intersection of modernism and progressive politics in Crestwood Hills, a remarkable post-war Southern California experiment in cooperative housing. This work was underwritten by the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities where Harold was in residence as a Getty Scholar. The first publication coming out of this study is “Broadacre in Brentwood?: The Politics of Architectural Modernism,” a chapter in Looking for Los Angeles, an anthology published by the Getty Research Institute and distributed by Oxford University Press.
